Nu Wave Swim Team Programming

 

 

Team Structure:


Nu Wave Swim Club offers professional technique instruction and training. The program is divided into smaller practice groups (described below) based on skill level and commitment. This allows practices to be geared towards the individual needs of each swimmer. Program fees vary based on practice groups and variation.

Note: Age ranges are used as a guide. Head Coach’s and specific group Coach's professional discretion can be used on an individual basis. The Head Coach has the final decision making on swimmer placement.

 

Riptide

Group Coaches:  Marshall Love (Newman), Brian Bardsley  and Chris Clark(UNO)

Target Performance:  Developing the 4 competitive strokes.  

Age Level: Geared to 5-8 year olds

Purpose:

1.    Introduction to competitive racing

2.    Learn all 4 strokes, legally

3.    Understanding the basics of starts and turns

4.     Learn through games for skill development  

Background Skill Requirement: To be in the Riptide group swimmers must be able to:

1.      Successfully completed a learn to swim program (via Love Swimmer or similar)

2.      Be comfortable with underwater play

3.      Complete a 25 yard freestyle

4.      Complete a 25 yard  backstroke 

Attendance Requirement: None  (50-100% recommended for optimum progress)

                               4 practices offered per week

                               Competition is optional, but encouraged monthly

                               Championship competition highly recommended

Group Emphasis:

Swimmers in this group will begin developing correct stroke technique in all four strokes, in a progressive manner.  Swimmers will also be introduced to turns, starts, underwater work, and sets. Opportunities are available for swimmers in this group to experience the fun of competition and par take in a positive team atmosphere.

 

Cyclone

Group Coach:  Jonathan Lindquist and Tess Sweatman (Newman), Brian Bardsley (UNO)

Target Performance:  Introduction to competitive swimming, make a state qualifying time

Age Level:   Geared to 7-10 year olds.

Purpose: 

1.  Introduction of competitive training / coaching (use of time intervals, pace clocks, etc.)

2.  Introduction of "3S" philosophy, checking heart rate

3.  Continued development of all strokes to "competitive / legal" standards

4.  Small use of Games for skill development

5.  Emphasis of Skills and Drills (technique)

6.  Coaching to the state level

7.  Full preparation for “year round” swimming

8.  Introduction into dry land training

Background Skill Requirement: To be in the Cyclone group swimmer must be able to:  

1. Capable of swimming 200 Yards freestyle without stopping

2.   Swim 100 IM, legally

3.   Competition start, blocks or side of pool

4.   Freestyle & Backstroke flip turns

5.   Aerobically handle 1,500-2,00 yards

Attendance Requirements:   None (75%-100% recommended for optimum progress)

                                                      5 practices offered per week.

                                                      At least 1 competition a season and championship meet

Group Emphasis:

Swimmers in this group will continue refining correct stroke technique in all four strokes, in a progressive manner.  This includes turns, starts, and underwater work. Also, introduction of complex “3S” training philosophy will begin and incorporation of a pace clock into the sets. Swimmers will gain a knowledge and understanding of the “3S” philosophy through learning how to take their heart rate.  Swimmers will learn what different heart rates mean and how they relate to sets.  Training principals and preparation for competition will be introduced.  This group serves as a transition between the instructional aspects of swimming and the training demands of the sport.  Training will consist of stroke work, interval training, and competitive events - including distance.  Swimmer specific strokes are not specified at this age. Opportunities are available for swimmers in this group to experience the fun of competition in meets and to take part fully in a positive team atmosphere.

Additional Provisions: Stretching and dry land are strongly recommended for this group to improve strength, flexibility and prevent injury.

 

Tsunami

Group Coach:  Sarah Gros

Target Performance: Competitive swimming at the state / national level.  

Age Level: Geared to 10-12 year olds & exceptional 9 year olds

Purpose:  

1.  Full use of “3S” training system

2.  Preparation for pre-national or national training

3.  Placing in the top 8 level at the state meet

Background Skill Requirement:  Before joining the tsunami group swimmers must be able:

1.  Swim a 200 yard IM, legally

2.  Be able to complete a 3,500 yard aerobic practice

3.  Complete 2 out of the 3 sets:

            a)  20 x 50 freestyle on 1:00 holding :55 or faster

            b)  10 x 100 freestyle on 2:00

            c)  10 x 50 kick on 1:10

Attendance Requirement:  Minimum 80% (attending less than 80% can result in falling below skill requirement)

                                                   6 practices offered per week

                                                   Competition is expected

Group Emphasis:

High level of training through “3S” training system.  Swimmers should also be fully educated and knowledgeable about how to take their heart rate and how different heart rates relate to different sets with a practice.  This knowledge is the cornerstone for the “3S” training system.  In this group the understanding, of advanced technical skills ,of the strokes, starts, and turns shall be integrated into the seasonal plan.   Swimmers will be given advanced training in competition, stretching, a wide range of dry land will be predominant throughout the season.  Swimmers will progress through commitment.  A desire to improve and a willingness to take the steps necessary for competitive progress are expected of all athletes in this group.

Additional Provisions: Stretching and dry land are requirements for this group to improve strength, flexibility and prevent injury.

                         

Pre-National

Group Coach:  Jacque Fessel Millican

Target Performance:  Competitive swimming at the state level/national level.  

Age Level: Geared towards 13-18 year olds and advanced 12 year olds.

Purpose:

1.  To place top 8 at the state swim meet.

2.  Understand the importance of time management and priorities as a swimmer

3.  Prepare for the national level swimming

4.  Attain Florida/Texas Sectional cuts  

Attendance Requirement:  Swimmers are expected to attend a minimum of 80% of practices

                                                   8 practices offered per week               

Background Skill Requirement:

1.  Aerobically be able to handle 5,000 yard practice

2.  80% practice attendance

3.  12 and Under – 2 southern zone sectional times

      13 year olds -  Complete 2 out of the 3 sets:                

                                 a)   5 x 200 IM on 3:10

                                 b)   10 x 50 kick on 1:00 holding :55 or faster

                                 c)   10 x 100 freestyle on 1:30 holding 1:15 or faster

Group Emphasis: The swimmers in this group will be trained exclusively though the “3S” training system.  Stretching and dry land are additional requirements for this group to improve strength, flexibility and prevent injury.

Additional Provisions: Enrollment into the Elite program requires a recommendation from sub-group coach, final approval of Head Coach, and parent / swimmer education on expectations of the program.

 

National

Group Coach:  Jacque Fessel Millican

Target Performance:  Competitive swimming at the national level.  

Age Level: Geared towards 14-18 year olds and advanced 13 year olds.

Purpose:

1.  To place top 8 at the state swim meet, achieve sectional qualifying times, junior national qualifying times, senior national qualifying times, and   

      Olympic trail qualifying times.

2.  Understand the importance of time management and priorities as a swimmer.

3.  Prepare for what it takes to be a successful college swimmer (not just physical aspects)

Background Skill Requirement:  Before joining the national group swimmers must be able:

1.  Top 8 at the state meet in at least 1 race.

2.  Attendance of 85% or higher in previous group.

3.  Complete 3 out of the 4 sets:

                       a)  5 x 100 freestyle on 1:15

                       b)  10 x 200 freestyle on 2:30

                       c)  10 x 50 stroke on :45 (back/fly)  :50 (breast)

                       d)  10 x 50 kick on :55  hold :50 or faster

Attendance Requirement: Swimmers MUST attend a minimum of 80% of practices.  Failure to maintain 80% attendance will result in the swimmer

                                                  moving to Pre-National until 80% in attained for 30 days.

                                                  1 morning practice a week is required

                                                  8 practices offered per week                              

Group Emphasis: The swimmers in this group will be trained exclusively though the “3S” training system.  Stretching and dry land are additional requirements for this group to improve strength, flexibility and prevent injury.

 

Additional Provisions: This group constitutes the highest level within the Nu Wave Swim Club structure. Swimmers earn their position in this group by demonstrating the necessary dedication needed to achieve their maximum potential as a competitive swimmer and young adult. Enrollment into the Elite program requires a recommendation from sub-group coach, final approval of Head Coach, and parent / swimmer education on expectations of the program.

 

 

Masters


Location:  Newman School

Coach:  Marshall Love

Practice Times:  5:30 am-7:00 am Monday, Wednesday, Friday

Age Range: 18 Years of Age and Older

Attendance Requirements: None

For the young at heart, the masters program will have quality instruction as well as training programs prepared on a daily basis.
